Army dogs are known for their brilliant discipline, indomitable fight, accurate grasp of commands, and an unmatched sense of smell. All Indian army dogs don't get the same treatment as their awarded and celebrated uniformed bipedal counterparts.

As long as the dogs are in service, they are very well cared for. After retirement, some may wind up as guard dogs, but many are also rehabilitated into dog shelters. The canines who once enjoyed living with army soldiers in open fields are restricted to closed spaces in rehabilitation centers. They live a sedentary lifestyle, which is not how nature intended it to be.

Army dogs are trained to perfection

A journalist, Navya Singh, explains in a video posted on her YouTube channel that these pups begin training at the age of six months. After graduating when they are about a year old, they start performing specialised tasks such as sniffing and rescuing. The dogs follow rigorous routines until they are 8 and are close to retirement, proving they are extremely fit.

"Their requirements are very different from those of a regular pet dog," Navya asserts, adding, "A dog that has been very active physically will find it very difficult to stay in a kennel. It makes them vulnerable to heart diseases and mental trauma."

Earlier, army dogs would have been put down after their service ended, but now they have a chance to enjoy a post-service life. In 2018, the Ministry of Defence issued orders to send service animals post-retirement to army centres. "The government has released additional funds and we will take full care of the animals in the army establishments," an official said, Economic Times reported.
