Christian Harrison's Inspiring Journey: Overcoming Surgeries to Reach the ATP Finals (2025)

Imagine facing excruciating pain, the kind that steals your sleep and halts your life. For Christian Harrison, this wasn't just a fleeting moment; it was a recurring theme throughout his tennis journey. This is his story of relentless perseverance.

American doubles star Christian Harrison shares a candid, first-person account of his incredible journey, detailing the hurdles he's overcome to compete at the highest level of the sport. Now, preparing to compete with Evan King at the Nitto ATP Finals, Harrison reflects on a career defined by resilience.

It all started when he was a young, rising star. At 14 years old, already ranked among the world's best in his age group, a promising career seemed within reach. But fate had other plans. A bone infection in his left femur brought his world crashing down.

"I was in excruciating pain. I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t do anything," Harrison recalls. The pain, initially dismissed, turned out to be a serious bone infection. Harrison's experience highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis, as the infection was initially misdiagnosed multiple times.

He was lucky. Before modern medicine, such infections often led to amputation. Harrison received excellent care, thanks to the support of Nick Bollettieri, who arranged treatment at the Mayo Clinic. A successful surgery offered a temporary reprieve, but it was just the beginning of a long battle.

As he approached 19, a labrum tear in his hip led to multiple surgeries: two hip surgeries, a shoulder surgery, a wrist surgery, and two adductor surgeries. These procedures sidelined him for nearly three years, followed by additional periods of absence. This is where Harrison's mental fortitude truly shines. But here's where it gets controversial...

He found ways to stay positive, focusing on the belief that things could always be worse. His brother, Ryan, a successful player himself, provided inspiration. Harrison's dedication to the sport never wavered, even during his toughest times.

Returning to the court wasn't easy. It took time to regain his form. However, Harrison's love for the game never diminished. He climbed back into the Top 200 in the PIF ATP Rankings and reached the semi-finals of an ATP Tour event in Delray Beach in 2021. He qualified for a major main draw for the first time in 2016, did it again at Wimbledon two years later and eventually made it back to a Slam main draw at SW19 in 2022.

But during a first-round match at Wimbledon, he suffered a foot injury. Despite winning the match, he had to withdraw early in the second round. A chip in his heel, requiring a lengthy recovery, led him to change his focus. And this is the part most people miss...

That's when he made the pivotal decision to focus on doubles. Harrison's love for tennis, the simple joy of hitting the ball, fueled his determination. This passion, shared by greats like Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka, keeps him going.

Now, playing full-time doubles, Harrison and his partner, Evan, are competing at the Nitto ATP Finals, alongside the world's elite players. Facing the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, Harrison finds renewed appreciation for the sport. The experience reinforces that all the hard work is worthwhile.

"I didn’t want to give up and accept that injuries or surgeries would be the reasons I stopped doing something," he states. Harrison's journey is a testament to the power of the human spirit. His story is a powerful reminder that with determination, anything is possible.
