Why do Food delivery Apps see a Surge in Usage?

Food Delivery App | User Statistics 2022 (1)

Having an online platform is a must in the digital economy, and with food delivery apps, you have the best of both worlds, taste, and comfort. So isn't having food delivered while we sit, wait and relax at our homes is the best outcome?

Despite the convenience and comfort the food delivery apps offered, there were a mere 816 million (roughly) users in 2017. To strike a better comparison with other digital platforms, Facebook had 1.32 billion monthly active users in the same period.

Either people weren't aware of the food delivery apps' benefits, or people were hesitant to use them.

But as the mobility crisis struck in the last few years, people shifted from food delivery apps to silent food carving. With simple user interfaces and seamless features, we browse, choose, order, pay, and wait for delivery- just the easy way.

To put that in numbers, food delivery apps had around 1.96 billion users in 2021.

Despite the pandemic propulsion, the number will likely grow because food delivery apps fit naturally in the changing landscapes and consumer behaviors.

Your consumer base is significantly influenced by a food delivery app. There will be four out of five consumers connecting with business apps. Customers expect brands to be accessible over the internet. As a result, a food delivery app becomes crucial for business growth.

To add more, a food delivery app establishes long-term relationships with brands. At the same time, loyalty programs and discount coupons are used to reward loyal users.

With food delivery apps, customers can quickly connect to restaurants. Most of the operators claim to deliver food in under 15 to 20 minutes. That is speedy food, good food.

Users are not limited to fast foods; they can check and order meals, different cuisines, and a lot more.

Since Pizza Hut's first online pizza purchase in 1994, online food delivery has grown into a multibillion-dollar industry. By 2022, the revenue from online food delivery is expected to reach $339,257 million.

In the early 2000s, a group of people wanted to take food orders online. On the east coast, it was Seamless and GrubHub on the west. After they merged, they saw 90 percent of the online orders.

The aggregator model of Takeaway.com or Delivery Hero was quite popular, as they had low commission rates. But small eateries that couldn't arrange deliveries were left in the backdrop.

Thus, the next decade saw new business models in the online food catering industry. Platform-to-consumer food delivery platforms like Deliveroo and UberEats offered delivery services to partner restaurants, winning the market at once.

What are the User Trends in the Food Delivery App Market?

The food delivery apps were gaining momentum in each global market before 2020, but the crisis they underwent wasn't expected until the next presidential election.

With inventory storages, workers moving out, and exceedingly increased demands, the delivery apps fell short of coping.

Takeaways and pizza deliveries once dominated the food delivery industry. However, with the inception of websites and apps, the operations have changed. The online platforms provide users access to a wide variety of restaurant' meals.

The Zion and Zion research team polled 2,928 US customers aged 18 and above to find out how common these multi-restaurant delivery websites/apps are, as well as their relative popularity. Though the research was published by authors Aric Zion, MS, and Thomas Hollmann, MBA, Ph.D., in 2019, it serves as a good reference.

The survey was based on a set of questions, and participants answered those. Here we have mentioned some of them.

How many times have you ordered restaurant meal delivery through a website or app that allows you to choose from a variety of restaurants in the last 90 days?

41 percent of consumers have used a multi-restaurant delivery website/app at least once during the duration. The maximum usage was 11+ times, to which 3 percent of the participants responded.

Which multi-restaurant delivery apps/websites do you use the most?

Grubhub has been used by 37.8% of all multi-restaurant delivery website/app users, followed by UberEATS at 36.0%, and DoorDash at 19.9%.

What is your age, and do you use food delivery apps and websites?

The survey found that younger persons are more likely to use those services. 63 percent of people 18 to 29 years old have used a multi-restaurant delivery website or app service in the past 90 days.

People of the age group 30 to 44 use food delivery apps and websites by 51 percent. Followed by 29 percent for those 45 to 60 and just 14 percent for those 60 and over.

Despite the odds and beliefs, the survey found there was a correspondence between low-income and higher usage.

When segmenting by income, it becomes clear that the lower a consumer's income, the more likely they are to use restaurant delivery services. The lowest-income people use it the most: 51.6 percent of those earning less than $10k per year use it, and 44.6 percent of those earning $10k to $24.9K per year use it.

It is curious to note such relevance, but it doesn't conclude anything. As found in the survey, the younger people, i.e., 18-29, use the most, and most of them don’t have an appreciable source and amount in paychecks unless they are Bill Gates()
