Is there a Costco in Oahu, and in Maui?
I am wondering if I should bring along my Costco card for cheaper souvenirs at Costco? I know there is one in Big Island. Would you know if there is a Costco in Oahu and in Maui? If not, is there a Walmart, or KMart?
Thanks.

Maxine, Yes, there are four on Oahu and one on Maui.
The Oahu locations are at 333A Keahole Street in Honolulu, 4380 Lawehana Street in Honolulu, 94-1331 Ka Uka Blvd. in Waipahu, and 525 Alakawa Street in Iwilei. (Strangely, the last one shows up as being in Iwilei, but underneath the map it shows that address as being in Honolulu.)
The Maui location is at 540 Haleakala Highway in Kahalui.
Information on store hours and what each warehouse includes is at http://www.costco.com. Hope this helps...

maxine-
The Costco in Salt lake (Lawaehana ST) is about to close. it is being replaced with the new one in Iwilei. Iwelei is a section of downtown Honolulu- it is off Nimitz, and if you are asking someone for directions ask for Home Depot or Dole Cannery. They are side by side. There is another Costco out in Hawaii Kai- Keahole Street is about a mile before you hit Hanauma Bay.
The other is right off the H-1 on Waipio Uka. This neighborhood is actually Waipio Gentry... It is only Waipahu in the Post office's mind, not in its physical location. It is convenient if you are heading towards the north shore. They will have good local books, aloha shirts, local CDs and snacks. Wal-mart also has a lot of souvenirs at really good prices. The better of the two is in Mililani, again a good stop when driving to or from the north shore. We have a bunch of K-Marts...one is in Iwilei, about a block from Home Depot Costco, etc.

Why NOT? They sell the exact same mac nuts as in Waikiki at 1/2 the price, Nice aloha shirts for 1/2 the cost at macy's or Hilo hatties, and WalMart carries locally made art items, silver and gold Hawaiian jewelery, aloha wear and local T-shirts, and even tacky keychains and fake lei all at very reasonable prices. You could buy these in Waikiki or at Ala Moana Center, but it would cost you more, plus if that little aloha shirt doesn't fit your nephew in kansas, he can return it!

I do realize the locals deserve low prices like the rest of us, but do you know how depressing it is to hear that Costco and Wal Mart are in "paradise."

That would be the day that I would spend a fortune to fly to Hawaii, stay in a hotel and then waste precious (not to mention costly), vacation time scouring through a Costco. Hey Maxine, ever stop to figure out how much that little foray to a discount store is going to cost you, in terms of vacation minutes?
I have to believe this is a troll too. Anyone who would waste their time in Hawaii at Costco or KMart needs to have their head examined.

As one of "the locals," let me point out that paradise is relative, as well as an illusion. For me, the closest place to paradise is the Scottish Highlands -- where there is economic depression and displacement of locals by money-wielding Brits. Exposure to this doesn't shatter my image of my paradise, it deepens my understanding of it.
And on the other point, Hawaii being a tourism-driven economy heavily weighted toward service-sector jobs, the first Costco here, in Salt Lake, broke nationwide records for Costco single-store sales when it opened.

I spent 10 days on Oahu, stayed with cousins who are military so I didn't have complete control over what we did. It actually was pretty interesting to see what was offered at the PX and Costco that are different from here in New England. Great prices on chocolate-covered Mcadamia nuts, but even at Costco the grocery prices were fifty percent higher than at home!
One of the reasons we travel is to see how people live NOW in other places, not just how their ancestors lived. And this is how Hawaiians live today.
But the stadium swap meet was definitely a fun way to shop for souvenirs, aloha shirts, etc.
