How do I increase my chances of a residency match? ›

Strengthening Your Residency Application

This involves meeting residency requirements, excelling in medical school, and gaining relevant clinical experience. Additionally, participating in extracurricular activities, research, and community service can set you apart from other candidates.

As a "fast track" or research pathway resident, the full training commitment includes an additional two years to be added at the end of subspecialty clinical training, for the sole purpose of research and establishing an academic career.

CaRMS does not have a “maximum” number of residency programs so you can apply to as many as you wish. However, we do not recommend that you use these numbers as a guideline for how many residency programs you should apply to.

The hardest specialties to match into are those with stringent selection criteria and fewer residency slots. These include competitive fields like Orthopedic Surgery and Ophthalmology, where the demand for positions significantly exceeds the supply.

The main red flags that residency applications look for include: Failed Step exams. Failed coursework, particularly failing clinical rotations. Having to repeat any part of your training.

As with medical school acceptance rates, admission into residency programs is highly competitive. Sending a residency letter of intent can help you match to your top choice program. If you're an international medical graduate (IMG), it can be the key to how to get into a residency program as an IMG.

While there are no guarantees, clearly the more programs that you rank, the higher your chances are of a match. Data suggests that if you do not match by your 12th to 14th spot, your chances are not much better with more ranks.

What are the least competitive residencies? Primary care specialties tend to be less competitive. For example, family medicine, internal medicine, and pathology.

Good Grades in Clerkships

An important predictor of success in residency is a candidate's grades in their clerkships. Residency program directors will also look specifically at clerkship grades in specialty clerkships to confirm that a student can succeed in the type of work they will be performing in residency.

Among primary care options, Family Medicine and Internal Medicine are generally considered easiest medical specialties to study, with relatively shorter residencies compared to some other specialities. Moreover, Emergency Medicine is the medical speciality that takes the least amount of time.

The average length of residency training is about four and a half years. The shortest residency training programs are three years and the longest are seven. After residency training, some people pursue fellowship training which can range in length from one to three years, on average.

Around five percent of US allopathic medical school graduates do not match anywhere. If you receive notification on the Monday of Match Week that you didn't end up matching, however, you're not completely out of options.

According to the latest NRMP data, the overall residency match rate is 93.7% for US MD seniors, and 91.6% for US DO seniors. Overall, allopathic medical graduates have a slight advantage over their osteopathic peers when it comes to residency matching.

In 2023, 93.3% of applicants matched to a residency, according to the NRMP's 2023 Main Residency Match Report. Match rates dropped to 67.6% for international medical graduates (IMGs) and to 59.4% for non-U.S. citizens. DO graduates had slightly lower match rates than students from medical doctor programs, at 91.6%.

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the top three reasons for students not matching are poor exam scores, poor academic standing, and poor interviewing or interpersonal skills.
