KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • July 22 is celebrated as National Mango Day.
  • Each Miyazaki mango can weight between 200 and 300 grams.
  • An orchardist couple in Jabalpur deployed four guards and six dogs to protect their Miyazaki Mango trees.

National Mango Day is observed on July 22 every year. The day celebrates the tropical fruit, which is regarded as the king of all fruits in India.

Since mango is one of the most popular fruits in the whole wide world, it’s only natural for the collective frenzy to have a dedicated day.

It’s culturally significant, going back millennia in Indian folklore and popularly associated with Maharashtra and Gujarat. However, a variety of mango is also cultivated in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur and it’s exceptional in that one kilogram of the fruit sells for around Rs. 20,000.

Called the Miyazaki mango, this exquisite mango breed is native to Miyazaki city of Japan, where it costs nearly Rs. 2.7 lakh to buy a kg. In fact, it’s so rare that a couple in Madhya Pradesh last year hired four guards and six dogs to protect two Miyazaki Mango trees.

Rani and Sankalp Parihar of Jabalpur had planted two mango saplings in their orchard back in the day but were in for a surprise when it bore exotic, ruby-coloured coloured Japanese Miyazaki Mangoes, dubbed “Egg of the Sun”.

When the word got out, thieves snuck into the orchard and ran off with the botanical rarities. Following the incident, the couple decided to fortify the pair of Miyazaki Mango trees with seven mangoes.

When Sankalp first got his hands on the saplings, he was neither aware of the variety nor was in Japan to acquire the tree.

He was travelling to Chennai when another man on the train handed him some of these.

“He offered these saplings to me and asked to take care of these plants like our babies,” the farmer recalled. “We planted [the saplings] in the orchard without knowing what variety of mangoes it will produce.”
