A corporate showdown is brewing between Wingtech and Nexperia, and the stakes are high for the global chip supply chain.
Wingtech, the Chinese parent company of Nexperia, has extended an olive branch to the Dutch chipmaker's court-appointed custodians, inviting them for talks on regaining control of the company. But here's where it gets controversial: Nexperia's European arm and its Chinese parent have been at loggerheads since the Dutch government stepped in, leading to a court decision that ousted Wingtech's founder as Nexperia's CEO.
The dispute has had far-reaching consequences, causing chip shortages and production issues for automakers worldwide. While governments have eased restrictions, the battle continues, with Nexperia's Chinese packaging arm declaring independence and seeking to replace European chip wafers with Chinese-made alternatives.
Nexperia, for its part, wants to focus on restoring normal operations, but Wingtech insists that ownership and control questions take precedence.
"The core prerequisite for resolving Nexperia's governance impasse is restoring Wingtech's lawful control," the company stated.
Arnold Croiset van Uchelen, the custodian of Nexperia's shares, confirmed receiving the invitation, but he and his colleague Guido Dierick are keeping the details close to their chest.
And this is the part most people miss: Nexperia's Chinese packaging arm has halted shipments to China, citing nonpayment, and the company's chip stockpiles are dwindling. The car industry is bracing for potential shortages in January.
