Our Ethos (2024)

At Flying Colours, we provide a stimulating environment where children learn through play and by following their interests. The nursery is a place to gain a sense of self and build confidence, where children can discover they are capable of doing things for themselves.

We are fortunate that one of the owners is a fully-qualified and experienced primary school teacher, Laura, who will ensure every child reaches their full potential, whilst preparing them with the skills that will ensure a smooth transition from nursery to school.

Parents are children’s first and most enduring educators. This makes a strong partnership between parents and Flying Colours essential. We work with parents, sharing information and experiences to ensure we provide seamless development for every child.

Pre-Birth to Three

For our younger children, we follow the Pre-Birth to Three Framework and its Four Key Principles for best starts and positive outcomes.

In addition, there are Nine Features of the Key Principles in Practice: Role of Staff, Attachments, Transitions, Observation, Assessment and planning, Partnership Working, Health and wellbeing, Literacy and Numeracy, Environments and Play.

Curriculum for Excellence

For our older children, we follow the Scottish Government's Curriculum for Excellence, which continues to monitor a young person’s progress until the age of 18.

The key areas of learning are Expressive Arts, Health and Wellbeing, Literacy, Mathematics, Religious and Moral Education, Social Studies, Sciences and Technologies.

Children thrive on the loving and secure relationships provided by their parents. These valuable relationships can also be provided by a key person. This person is a named member of staff who is responsible for making a small group of children feel safe, secure and cared for. A key person will respond sensitively to children’s feelings and behaviours and meet emotional needs by giving reassurance when they need it. The key person supports physical needs too, helping with issues like nappy changing, toileting and dressing.

Your child's key person is a familiar face who is accessible and available as a point of contact, and who builds a personal relationship with you and your child.
