Owen Tippett achieved his second career hat trick, leading the Philadelphia Flyers to a remarkable 7-3 victory over the NHL's top team, the Colorado Avalanche, on Friday night. This win marked a significant moment for the Flyers, as they handed the Avalanche their fourth loss in just five games.
Tippett was instrumental in the game, kicking things off by scoring the first goal early in the first period and then netting two more goals in the third. He also contributed with an assist. Alongside him, Matvei Michkov shined with two goals and an assist, while Denver Barkey and Bobby Brink added to the scoreline. On the defensive side, Samuel Ersson stood tall in goal, making an impressive 32 saves throughout the match.
This victory capped off a successful three-game road trip for Philadelphia, where they finished with a record of 2-0-1. Additionally, the Flyers’ triumph disrupted the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Colorado's 2001 Stanley Cup championship team, which had 15 former players in attendance, including notable figures like team president Joe Sakic, Ray Bourque, Peter Forsberg, and Rob Blake. Unfortunately for the Avalanche, this loss represented just their second home regulation defeat this season, and they ended their longest homestand with a mixed record of 3-3-1.
The turning point came when Tippett put the Flyers ahead 4-3 only 56 seconds into the third period. Just over a minute later, Michkov skillfully redirected Emile Andrae’s shot past goalie Mackenzie Blackwood. Tippett sealed his hat trick with a stunning short-handed breakaway goal at 9:36 left in the game, bringing his season total to 18 goals.
On the other side, Colorado managed to score through Cale Makar, Parker Kelly, and Victor Olofsson, while Nathan MacKinnon provided two assists, reclaiming the NHL scoring lead with a total of 87 points.
As for goaltending, Blackwood struggled, allowing six goals on only 19 shots in his second game back after recovering from a lower-body injury.
Looking ahead, the Flyers are set to host the New York Islanders on Monday night, while the Avalanche will travel to Toronto for their next matchup on Sunday.
