The Italian newspaper, Il Sole 24 Ore, has released its 2022 Quality of Life ranking, this year rewarding the Italian cities and provinces with the best living environment by age group. The categories include 'children' 0-10 years, 'young people' 18-35 years, and 'the elderly' over 65. In 2022, the best cities to live in Italy are Aosta,Piacenza and Cagliari.
In order to compile this ranking of the best quality of life in cities in Italy, a range of different areas were considered. These include:
- the total migratory balance
- youth entrepreneurship
- sports areas
- municipal administrators under 40 years of age
- rent (prices and availability)
- the marriage rate
- the rent gap between the centre and the suburbs
- average age of having children
- nightlife (bars and discos)
- e-commerce
- university graduates
- youth unemployment
Aosta took home the crown as the best city in Italy for children, while Piacenza won best city for young people and Cagliari with the best quality of life for the elderly and pensioners. Here's why.

The Children's Quality of Life index in Italy saw the province and city of Aosta triumph, thanks in particular to excellent school buildings and services.

On the other hand, the Quality of Life index for young people in Italy (up to 35 years of age) saw Piacenza triumph, thanks mainly to the average age of childbirth, which stands at 31.6, low youth unemployment, sports areas and services in the area such as bars and discos.

Finally, the index for Quality of Life of the elderly in Italy saw the metropolitan city of Cagliari triumph, particularly shining in terms of life expectancy.

In addition to Aosta, Piacenza and Cagliari, there are also other cities that scored well and that are also some of the best cities to live in Italy.
