Using the most complete information, posted on the Vann Family Forum by Dianne Schell and the webpage of Dick Fox, we can match up with this senario. However, there are enough inconsistencies, anomalies, and inaccuracies to cloud the identification"

Edward Vann I + Mary Barnes
(b. ca. 1720 - after 1768) Chowan County, NC

John "Joseph" Vann + Wah-li or Mary Christiana
(b. ca. 1735 - ca.1800)

James Vann
(b.ca. 1744 -) Chowan County, NC

Clement Vann + Wah-li or Mary Christiana & a white wife (mother of Avery Vann)
(b. ca. 1747 at Spring Place, GA - ca. 1830 in GA)

Edward Vann, Sr.
(b.1741 -) Tory soldier

Which is "James Clement Vann I" -James Vann or Clement Vann?
Clement Vann told Gen. Coffee in Nov. 1829 that he was 82 years old and entered the Cherokee Nation 50 years before (i.e. b. ca. 1747 and came to C.N. ca. 1779; thus NOT father of the part Cherokee James Vann (b. ca.1767)

Other postings list other siblings of these four persons, which were children of separate persons named Edward, John, or Thomas Vann (see Dianne Schell's lists and the information on Dick Fox's website)

In addition, the purported father of James Vann, "John Joseph Vann," contains aspects of John Vann (ca.1710 - ca.1780), an Indian trader who was in the Cherokee Nation about 1730 at a trading post on the Saluda River, not far from th Ninety-Six fortress. His mixed-blood Cherokee children included John Vann, Joseph Vann (possibly), and Wah-le Vann (Indian mother of James Vann).Wah-li's mother also had children by white traders Bernard Hughes and a Mr. Rowe (perhaps John Rae, trader at Augusta,GA). This John Vann may have been the brother of Edward Vann (white grandfather of James Vann). There have have been another brother, Joseph Vann, who was also a merchant among the Cherokees.

I hope this information clarifies the somewhat confusing family ties of Chief James Vann.
