Review: Is the Voicemod App Worth Installing on Your PC? (2024)

Last Updated on July 16, 2020 by Michael Brockbank

If you’re into live streaming or recording videos, you’ve probably wondered about using a voice changer. After all, there are a ton of possibilities, and not all of them are nefarious. So, what can the Voicemod app do for your video content?

Well, that depends on what you’re trying to accomplish, really.

Today, I’m going to dive into a bit of what Voicemod is and how well it works when using OBS.

In this video, I demonstrate using Voicemod with OBS as I record.

What is Voicemod?

Voicemod is voice changing software that alters what you sound like during recordings. Now, this can be during live streams or a saved video to upload to YouTube. And there are plenty of sound effects to choose from.

It’s a way to add a bit more pizzazz to your video content, and can be a lot of fun with the right audience. Of course, it also depends on how you’re matching a voice to various situations.

In a sense, Voicemod is the audio equivalent of augmented reality. And it happens in near-real-time.

If you want to try the software for yourself, you can:

Setting up the software wasn’t difficult at all. It was a simple download and install that added the program to my computer.

However, I do want to point out how the install does make Voicemod your default sound device in Windows. If you want to use the software, you need to go into sound settings and change your output to your normal default.

In my case, I switched it back to the Corsair headset.

After playing around with the settings for less than 5 minutes, I was able to get a handle of how the software worked. Perhaps the hardest part of the process was figuring out the volume settings since OBS and my microphone are set up for specific recordings.

Free vs Pro Versions of Voicemod

This review is focused more on the free version of Voicemod. However, you can buy the Pro for about $32 for a lifetime license. And because of the different things it can do, I am really debating on buying it outright.

For instance, the voice change software offers:

Limited Rotations of Voice Changes

In the free version, Voicemod will select six random voices that you can use throughout the day. There are plenty to choose from, though. And so far, I’ve come across a couple that I like.

Probably the best thing to do is to run the software for a month so you get a good sampling of what’s available. Then, if you find the voices of good quality, buy the software.

No Custom Mofications for the Free Version

I didn’t get to play with the custom effects screen as it’s locked behind the paywall. This would be awfully tempting for me to seal the deal if it were available.

Unfortunately, the free version of Voicemod doesn’t have access to that customizer.

Keybindings for Changing on the Fly

You can easily set up key bindings for the different voice and sound effects you add to the app. I don’t know if I’d add background sound effects, but you can set up certain keys to deliver specific sounds.

For instance, I think it would be fun to key bind the “cave” voice changer when I am in underground in Minecraft. As soon as I start digging, I can just hit the binding while I play.

Random Selections

The random button is kind of cool if you’re experimenting with voices during a video. In the right circ*mstance, it might promote a level of entertainment. Especially if you switched to the baby voice while playing something like Call of Duty.

I’m half tempted to do it just for the sake of sounding like a baby with a machine gun.

Some Voices Have Ambient Sounds

A few of the voice effects have ambient sounds connected to them. So, you can turn on the ambiance to add a higher level of sound quality for certain situations.

Take the “cave” effect I mentioned earlier. By turning on Ambient Sounds, you can hear the droplets of water as you might here underground.

Using OBS During Recordings and Live Stream

Now the big question: how well does Voicemod work with OBS? Actually, it connected without a single issue and ran perfectly. In fact, you can hear how it works in OBS by watching the video above.

I’ll do a proper tutorial for adding Voicemod to OBS in the future. But, essentially, you just add it as another input source. Since Voicemod adds the source to your computer, OBS is capable of seeing the software and quickly adding it to your assets.

I truly had no problem installing, adding, and using Voicemod in OBS.

I do want to point out how I am still working on the proper balance for audio output, though. I have specific settings for recording YouTube videos that are separate from Twitch.

So, I am adjusting the sound in Voicemod while balancing it out in OBS because I talk too softly in most cases.

It might be a good idea to create a whole new scene in OBS specifically for using the voice changer software. That way, I can switch back on the fly without having to modify any settings.

Is Voicemod Safe to Install on PC?

Whenever I come across anything new, I usually try to scan it with Malwarebytes. In this case, Malwarebytes didn’t find anything wrong with Voicemod. And, it didn’t seem to install background junk or bloatware that often comes with software nowadays.

As far as I can tell, at this moment in time, Voicemod is safe for PC users.

While the software sits idle, it’s only using between 25 and 30MB of memory. Once you load up the main screen, the memory usage only goes up to just above 40MB. So, it’s really not that bulky of a background program.

Even when you have a voice enabled, the memory usage only hits around 62MB-ish while using a fraction of a percent of your CPU.

Unless you’re on an older PC, or one that needs a dire case of upgrades, Voicemod should work flawlessly for you without lagging down your computer or live stream.

Would I Recommend Voicemod?

In reality, I had a bit too much fun with the voice changer when I was testing it for the YouTube video. And I’m excited to hear the other voices that become available, whether it’s the free rotation or with buying the software.

I would definitely recommend that people try the free version at least. This will give you an idea if the software is worth buying.

I’m still on the fence with actually paying for Voicemod. But I can say this, it’s definitely a tempting offer. Perhaps I’ll pay for the three months and really dive into what the Pro version can do before buying.

After all, what’s $7.50 for getting content for the website and YouTube channel?
