Revolutionizing Spatial Intelligence: Vision-Free Electrostatic Sensing by Softionics (2025)

Imagine a world where interacting with technology feels as natural as moving your own hands. Softionics Inc. is pioneering this future, and they're doing it without the need for cameras or wearables! Their innovative approach to spatial sensing is poised to revolutionize how we interact with the digital world.

Softionics, a deep-tech startup, is making waves with its PercepXR® input module. This isn't just another gadget; it's a vision-free, transparent, and ultra-thin film sensor. It can detect your hand motions and proximity in 3D without relying on cameras, infrared, or anything you need to wear.

Backed by the Korea Investment Accelerator and supported by the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA), Softionics showcased its groundbreaking technology at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025. This event was a launchpad, allowing them to connect with industry leaders and establish a foothold in the U.S. market.

During their visit, Softionics met with influential players like SRI International, Apple XR engineers, and Meta Reality Labs developers. These meetings focused on validating their Surface Charge Detecting and Ranging (SCDAR) technology and exploring commercialization strategies. Experts were impressed, seeing vision-free electrostatic sensing as a privacy-focused alternative to camera- or wearable-based systems. But here's where it gets controversial... Could this technology truly replace cameras and wearables, or are there limitations we haven't considered yet?

Following these discussions, Softionics was invited to present its sensing platform at SRI International. They're currently refining their prototypes for collaborative projects with XR and mobility OEMs. Their approach reduces reliance on cameras, addressing key challenges like latency, energy efficiency, and user privacy.

The PercepXR® module boasts impressive specs: it's over 85% transparent, ultra-thin (under 50μm), and lightweight (under 10g). It also has exceptional energy performance, lasting over 19 hours on a 300mAh battery. This makes it ideal for AR glasses, robotics, smart mobility dashboards, and next-generation human–machine interfaces. By combining Spatial Intelligence with vision-free electrostatic sensing, Softionics is redefining how we interact with technology.

Softionics has also received significant recognition, including being named one of the KDB Startup Top 7 (2024) and a finalist in the LG SUPERSTART Open Innovation Program. They also secured approximately $1.1 million in R&D funding from the Korean government. This recognition underscores their role in shaping the future of Spatial Intelligence.

Building on their early prototypes, Softionics is developing a second-generation PercepXR® module. These improvements will ensure consistent and reliable spatial interaction across various environmental conditions.

As Spatial Computing and AI-driven environments converge, Softionics envisions a future where technology understands and responds to the physical world intuitively. They aim to create a unified sensing framework, allowing devices to sense through electrostatic perception.

Softionics is actively expanding partnerships to establish a new interaction standard for Physical AI, empowering more natural, privacy-first, and energy-efficient human–machine interfaces. And this is the part most people miss... This technology isn't just about making interfaces better; it's about building the foundation for Physical AI, where machines truly understand and interact with the world around them.
