What is plastic surgery?
Plastic surgeryis the medical specialty associated with performingcosmetic or aesthetic surgeryto improve or change physical appearance, but alsoreconstructive plastic surgery, which can restore function and appearance after injury, accident or illness. Plastic surgeons can work with both adults and children.
What conditions does a plastic surgeon treat?
Common cosmetic plastic surgery procedures include:

- Eyelid surgery (e.g. blepharoplasty)
- Rhinoplasty (nose job)

When should you see a plastic surgeon?
You would be treated by a plastic surgeon if you had soft tissue damage or significant damage resulting from injury or trauma. You might also be treated by a plastic surgeon if you were born with a physical abnormality, or if you had undergone cancer surgery and required reconstruction (e.g. oncoplastic breast reconstruction following a mastectomy). Lastly, if you were unhappy with an element of your physical appearance, you might want to consult a cosmetic plastic surgeon to see if your appearance could be changed, which for some people may improve their self-esteem, confidence and quality of life.
