A young girl's heartbreaking confession has ignited a crucial conversation about the struggles faced by Ugandan youth. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni's recent address highlighted the urgent need for community support and systemic changes to prevent such tragedies.
During a campaign stop at Kibuku Primary School, the President shared a poignant moment. A schoolgirl bravely revealed her past contemplation of suicide, a consequence of limited opportunities. This confession served as a stark reminder of the silent battles many young Ugandans face. But here's where it gets controversial... The President emphasized that factors like poverty, inability to complete school, and lack of access to technical programs contribute to these feelings of despair.
Reflecting on his interactions at the Presidential Skilling Hub in eastern Uganda, President Museveni shared another impactful story. A young woman, once on the brink of ending her life, found renewed hope and purpose through the hub's training programs. This experience highlighted the need for reforms, particularly concerning free education. The President warned that school fees, coupled with pressure at home and limited job prospects, are pushing many children toward hopelessness.
And this is the part most people miss... President Museveni underscored that Uganda's transformation hinges on a combination of government investments in infrastructure (roads, electricity, schools, health facilities) and household wealth creation. He stressed the importance of peace as a foundation for development, enabling the expansion of essential services. The government is actively upgrading several health centers in Kibuku to improve access to healthcare.
However, the President also emphasized that families must leverage this enabling environment to generate wealth through initiatives like the four-acre model and various enterprise activities. He noted that while development is crucial, individual wealth creation is equally important.
The President highlighted that approximately 1.3 million people are currently employed in factories, emphasizing that job creation stems from business activity, services, agriculture, and manufacturing. He urged leaders implementing the Parish Development Model to ensure that all households participate in the money economy, moving away from subsistence farming.
Looking ahead, President Museveni expressed his commitment to revisiting and strengthening the free-education policy after the elections, using the girl's story as a guiding principle. He emphasized the importance of skilling hubs to provide opportunities for young people who may face barriers to education. The NRM's message is clear: peace, development, wealth creation, jobs, and free education are the pillars of Uganda's transformation.
NRM leaders, including Vice Chairperson Rt. Hon. Anita Among and District Chairperson Hajji Shalif Ssebakaki, rallied support for President Museveni and the NRM candidates. The President concluded by reaffirming the NRM's vision, ensuring that no child feels abandoned.
