X's Handle Marketplace: Get Your Dream Username for a Price! (2026)

Imagine paying a monthly fee just for the chance to snag your dream username on X (formerly Twitter). Sounds crazy, right? Well, X's new handle marketplace is officially open, and the price of entry – and the potential price of a 'rare' handle – is turning heads. But here's where it gets controversial: is it a legitimate opportunity, or just another way for X to squeeze more money out of its users?

Last month, X teased its plans to launch a marketplace to "redistribute" usernames from inactive accounts. Now, that feature is live for Premium+ subscribers (costing a cool $40 per month). In essence, it allows users to request usernames that were previously unavailable because they were tied to dormant accounts. Think of it as digital real estate, where prime property is finally up for grabs… but with a hefty price tag and some very specific rules. X announced the launch of this feature on their official XHandles account.

The marketplace categorizes usernames into two tiers: "priority" and "rare." The stated intention for "priority" handles is to help people secure usernames that more closely resemble their actual names. Sounds reasonable, right? But this is where things get murky. And this is the part most people miss... The distinction between "priority" and "rare" is far from transparent. One user, even after subscribing to the $40/month Premium+ tier, discovered that usernames like '@kbell' and '@karissa' were classified as "rare" and therefore unavailable through the "priority" channel. Instead, she was only able to register her "interest" in those names, accompanied by a brief explanation of why she wanted them. This begs the question: what criteria is X using to determine these classifications? Is it purely based on length, perceived desirability, or something else entirely?

According to X, "rare" handles are considered "the most valuable" and often consist of single words, slang terms, or short character combinations. Examples of potentially available "rare" handles include names like '@memelord', '@phone', '@gr0k' and '@AIchat'. The process of actually acquiring one of these, however, remains shrouded in mystery. X states that handles on your watchlist "may be released in a public drop where you, and others can apply to receive the handle for free via a merit based application system." In other words, you might have to compete with others and prove why you deserve the coveted username. Further complicating matters, X has also indicated that some exceptionally desirable handles will be offered for direct purchase on an invitation-only basis, with prices ranging from a staggering $2,500 to over seven figures. Imagine paying more for a username than you would for a house!

However, amidst the costly "rare" options, there are some amusing "priority" handles that are currently available. Examples include '@six_seven', '@elonfarts', '@grokfacts' and '@kbchat'. While some of these might be tempting, there's a strong suspicion that names like '@elonfarts' or '@grokfacts' wouldn't pass X's approval process. It's also important to choose wisely, as X only allows users to request one priority handle during the entire lifetime of their account. So, make sure the one you choose is what you really want. No take-backs!

But the story doesn’t end there. There are also significant strings attached to this whole process. In addition to the mandatory $40/month (or $395/year) Premium+ subscription, X has implemented a rather stringent set of rules for "maintaining your handle." These rules include:

  • Regular Content Creation: Accounts must consistently publish original and engaging content. Handles deemed "dormant" due to a lack of activity may be reclaimed by X.
  • Active Participation: Users are expected to actively participate in the X community by replying, reposting, and engaging in discussions. X emphasizes that handles should be used by active voices and creators who contribute to the platform, not by speculators or inactive users.
  • Regular Platform Activity: Accounts must log in from at least one device within a 30-day period. Failure to do so may result in the handle being reclaimed, according to X's Inactive Account Policy.

Perhaps most concerning is the clause stating that "X owns and can reclaim any handle." This isn't just a theoretical possibility. X has a history of seizing desirable handles from users who were actively using them, most notably the @X handle. NPR reported on how the user of @X wasn't even informed when the company took over his handle. This raises serious questions about ownership and control within the X ecosystem. Is your username truly yours, even if you're paying for it?

Given these uncertainties and potential pitfalls, the author of the original piece expressed hesitation about requesting any of the available "priority" handles. She might just stick with her existing handle (@karissabe), which she's used for the past 16 years. It's only two letters different from the "rare" variation of her first name and, most importantly, it doesn't come with any additional costs or restrictive conditions.

So, what do you think? Is X's handle marketplace a fair opportunity for users to acquire their dream usernames, or is it simply a cleverly disguised cash grab? And, more importantly, are you willing to risk losing your handle if you don't meet X's ever-changing criteria? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
